About The Oberg Clan
In September of 2007, I was contacted by a relative from Aland! Her name is Maria, and her grandmother, Thyra Adele Oberg, was my grandfather Karl's sister. This connection was amde via a message board, and what followed lead to my abillity to confirm a large chunk of the information contained on this website, as well as some additions made to it.

WELCOME!
This website used to concentrate mostly on the Swedish side of my family's heritage. But after stumbling into a previously unknown relative from my mother's side, I am now able to include that branch of my tree back to about 1600, in Normandy, France.

In 1916, my grandfather, Karl Fritjof Oberg, came to the US from Aland (then changing his name to Frederick Carl Oberg). Although I do not know the specific reason for my grandfather's decision to emmigrate to the US, I do know that the Germans bombed the harbor in Aland in 1916 by use of a zeppelin (might be a good time to move! LOL!!)
In 1921, the League of Nations determined that the Aland Islands would become part of Finland, but that the inhabitants would be allowed and encouraged to maintain their Swedish heritage and language (today about 97% of the population speaks Swedish). Aland can be found in the Baltic Sea located between Sweden and Finland.

A special 'Thank You!' must go out to the two people responsible for finding most of the information included in this website: First, to my new found cousin, Mary Govoni, who I 'bumped into' on the internet. She was able to answer many questions for me that had gone unanswered for years. And secondly, to Karin Mansen from the Alands landskapsarkiv, for taking the time to research my family history in Aland. Thank you to both of you!!!

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
